Connecting Galatians to the Big Picture of the Bible

To understand the book of Galatians in two minutes, let's place it within the big picture of the Bible.

The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ.

In the Old Testament, we can see why this rescue is necessary, because that's where the problem arises: the separation between God and man.

In the New Testament, we see the heavenly solution to this problem.

And the letters of Paul show that the solution is found in Jesus.

The book of Galatians is one of the first letters written by the Apostle Paul.

The Key Ideas of Galatians

It's a wake-up call that explains how the problem will never be solved through man's efforts, but only through faith in Jesus alone.

So with that…let's dive in:

At the time of receiving this letter, the churches in Galatia were in a critical situation: they were being pressured to observe the law of Moses—especially circumcision—in addition to their faith in Jesus Christ.

So, Paul begins his letter by first explaining his authority to write the letter–reminding them that he writes on behalf of Jesus Christ and not of men.

He warns the Galatians against accepting a false gospel.
The true gospel is the good news that people can be declared righteous by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ…not because they keep the law through their own efforts.

As an example, Paul cites Abraham, the forefather of the Jews. He too was justified by his faith and not by the law, because the law wasn't even given until much later.

The aim of the law was never to solve the problem, but to expose it. The solution is Jesus Christ.

Through Jesus, Christians are set free. Their lives are no longer bound by the law. Instead, they are free and able to follow Jesus Christ through the power of God's Spirit.

And this enables them to love and support each other.
