Connecting Isaiah to the Big Picture of the Bible

To understand the book of Isaiah in two minutes, let's place it within the big picture of the Bible. The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, we see why this rescue is necessary, because that's where the problem begins when humanity rebels against God. And in the prophetic books we see the consequences of this rebellion, as well as a call to repentance. The book of Isaiah stands at the very beginning of the prophetic books.

The Key Ideas of Isaiah

It shows that despite rebellion, God's plan leads to hope.

Isaiah lives at a time when the people of Israel are rebelling against God. In an overwhelming encounter with God, Isaiah recognizes God's absolute holiness and his own sin. But God forgives Isaiah and makes him His prophet—His messenger. With the message of this encounter, Isaiah comes before the people: God is both holy and gracious and offers forgiveness to anyone who sincerely repents.

Isaiah condemns their rebellion against God and calls them to repentance. But his message is largely rejected, and many continue in their rebellion. As a result, Isaiah announces judgment on Israel and on the surrounding nations, who are also guilty for despising God and oppressing others. Yet, even in the face of judgment, there is hope. Though the people rebel, God's promises remain: a remnant will survive, and a righteous king will come—one who will ultimately bring peace.

Application to Christ + Summary

So, the book of Isaiah shows that despite rebellion, God's plan leads to hope. It sets the stage for the One who is the foundation of this hope—the suffering servant of God and righteous King: Jesus Christ.
