To understand the Book of Judges in two minutes, let's place it within the big picture of the Bible. The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, we see why this rescue is necessary, because that's where humanity separated itself from God. And in the historical books, we see that separation from God leads to destruction. The Book of Judges is one of the earlier historical books.

The Key Ideas of Judges

Judges shows that a downward spiral of failure begins when people reject God's rule in order to do whatever they want.

At the beginning of the book, the people of Israel live in the land that God has given them through His mighty help. But after a period of peace and prosperity, the Israelites forget God and think they can manage without Him. They begin to live like the nations around them and abandon God's commandments and authority over them by doing whatever they want. Without God's standard, there is disorder, injustice, and conflict. The people lose their unity and suffer great hardship due to enemy attacks.

But God is merciful and does not abandon His people. As soon as the Israelites recognize their guilt and cry out to Him in their distress, He helps them. He intervenes by repeatedly sending deliverers called "Judges." These leaders defeat the enemies and restore peace.

But after each deliverance, the same pattern repeats itself: the Israelites live in peace, forget what God has done, turn away from Him, and plunge themselves back into distress. Their enemies oppress them until, in their distress, they cry out to God again and He helps them. This downward spiral of pride, distress, repentance, and salvation repeats itself over and over again... until the people no longer cry out to God.
